After much anticipation on Monday 16th October, we opened our new radiation oncology treatment centre at Cabrini in Malvern. The centre was built within 5 months - a national build time record for GenesisCare – most centre builds average 12 months. The new service allows our patients to have access to a fully integrated, comprehensive cancer care onsite at Cabrini Malvern. This new service is accessible for both inpatients and outpatients, allowing patients to receive their cancer treatment in the one familiar place.
GenesisCare radiation oncologists include Dr Ian Porter, Dr Karen Taylor, Dr Mario Guerrieri and Dr David Blakey.
Di Lopez was one of the first patients to visit the new GenesisCare centre and to receive treatment. She was most impressed with the centre and commented, “The centre is wonderful, so light and airy”.
Di (picture below) is seen using the ‘deep inspiration breath hold’ (DIBH) technique to treat her breast cancer. DIBH is a new technique for patients with left-sided breast cancer. When Di inhales the air in her lungs pushes the heart away from her chest wall, minimising radiation exposure to her heart. She wears the goggles to allow her to monitor her breathing pattern so she knows when to take a deep breath, hold and then release it.
