RADIOTHERAPY SERVICES – BRACHYTHERAPY
Integrated Brachytherapy Unit
This specialised service enables brachytherapy procedures to be performed in a purpose built theatre located within the radiotherapy department. This development improves the efficiency of brachytherapy treatments and reduces the need and risk associated with transferring patients throughout the hospital.
The extensive brachytherapy program provided by Radiation Oncology Victoria involves the collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary care team including: Surgical Specialists, Radiation Oncologists, Radiation Therapists, Medical Physicists, Anaesthetists and Nursing.
The program encompasses the following regular procedures, patients groups:
- HDR Brachytherapy
- Lung & oesophageal
- Surface Mould & Valencia applicator (skin cancers)
- LDR Brachytherapy
- Prostate Volume Studies
- Fiducial Marker Implants
Mobile Seed Program
As an added service element Radiation Oncology Victoria has developed a program that enables patients to have improved assess to brachytherapy prostate seed procedures. This treatment technique is often very useful in the treatment of early stage prostate cancer. In direct collaboration with urologists Radiation Oncology Victoria can provide the service at your local hospital.
Please check with your specialist regarding the availability of this service in your area. Alternatively we can provide on request a list of participating urologists and hospitals.
SpaceOAR - Spacing Organs at Risk to treat prostate cancer
New to Radiation Oncology Victoria in 2014, SpaceOAR is a liquid that is injected between the prostate and rectum under ultrasound guidance. The procedure takes around 15 mins and has no lasting effects, most men return to normal activity immediately. Once injected, the liquid solidifies within seconds into a hydrogel that pushes the rectum away from the prostate. By moving the rectum away from the prostate, radiation effects on the rectum are minimised. Even small movements of a few millimetres can make a significant difference in the side effects experienced. Read more
